The princess bride character montoya. What can I say, this is THE perfect fairy tale on film. I would go as far as to say it surpasses Snow White and that is saying something. OK, the Peter Falk/Fred Savage bits may be laying the cheese on a bit thick, but they do add a knowing narrative punctuation as well as making the fairy tale world seem even more wonderful and fantastic in contrast with a sick-bed in the mid-80's. Besides, they're straight out of Golding's book.
The story is perfectly paced, rushing through all the backstory and getting to the action right from the outset. All the elements you expect in a fairy story: sword-play, damsels in distress, monsters, insurmountable odds overcome, miracles and above all, true love.
Cary Elwes and Robin Wright are excellent leads with Andre the Giant and Mandy Patakin in support. I think top marks have to go to the script though. It's the story that makes this film, in particular the language used and way the characters interact.
This is one of those films that spawns quotes. You will see lines from this film in signatures on bulletin boards across the web. That's gotta mean this is a much loved film reflected in it's deserved IMDB top 100 status.
So if you're feeling down or just plain ill, watch this for an instant dose of sunshine just when you need it.
